Everyone had given up on him. Nobody could train him.

Until I found the ONE trainer who could.

He taught me so much about leadership, and forever changed my view about what is possible — even in the face of trauma.

And while your kids are definitely not doggies, I will for sure share with you what I learned at that time about nonverbal respect cues.

For real.

I had never been around them, even as a child, and absolutely did not “get” them.

If I can learn the wisdom and language of children, let’s just say I have great hope for YOU.

P.S. For the record, children are actually AWESOME once you understand them.

Are my dopamine. 

Meaning and how we apply it is literally my drug of choice. 

It is why I am addicted to this way of parenting. 

Nothing beats the high for me of taking messy, yucky behavior and transforming it into cleanly communicated love. 

For 25 years, without even realizing it.

Before I was a podcaster, I was a voiceover artist in Hollywood, doing commercials, video games, animation, and audiobooks.

At one point I was even the lead voice for both Trojan Condoms and Pampers at the same time.

Hey, it makes sense if you think about it. Try this, and if that didn't work, try this instead. 

I try to eat all organic food.

Except I love Blow Pops. Go figure.

The combo means I curse like a taxi driver, but one filled with joy!

I curse for flavor, because it makes me laugh and gives the learning some extra zest. It also helps break your brain just enough to get some new ideas in.

I speak in metaphors & analogies. It makes for speedy learning that is also extra nutritious. 

All the stories allow the work to sometimes bypass your brain and speak straight to your soul in a deeply rich, concentrated format that gives you quicker results that also last longer!

The first time our eldest's pediatrician's office staff told me, “Mommy, you can have a seat right here,” I felt nauseated and invisible, like they had just erased the entire human being that I had been before that, who also had a name!

I ultimately left the office (for that and other more justifiable reasons) but realized my beef with motherhood was far greater than a word.

With time, I came to understand it was the way in which I was mothering - and the way society viewed me as a mother - that felt so profoundly “erasing.”

Ironically, I now feel that it is this same motherhood that has led me to my truest self and given me my most powerful voice and identity.

Being a mother has changed me intellectually, spiritually, practically, and politically.

So yeah, go ahead and call me Mommy, as long as you do it with some serious fucking respect. I will meet you on that playground any day.

I started tracking my habits and realized I could change my life by making simple small adjustments.

I thought it was weird the grown-ups hadn’t seemed to figure this out yet. 

No, but kids who are strong-willed have a certain temperament that needs to be accounted for when you are figuring out how to parent them. In fact all children would greatly benefit from that same level of care, whether they exhibit giftedness (this can look like academic excellence or even school refusal), learning differences, anxiety, social anxiety, rigidity, ADHD, ASD, sensory sensitivities or any number of quiet neurodivergences that place them in the twice-exceptional category.

I have spent the last 16 years learning how to optimize each of my own boys (who are now well-calibrated teenagers), and I have spent the last decade passing the wisdom of all my carefully collected intel on to the rest of my fellow parents.

Because I feel you. And I want you to know how awesome it can be once you match the kind of parenting you offer, to the kind of kid that you have. 

Everything suddenly...WORKS.

When I was 10, my best friend and I laid down on an outdoor NYC stairwell and let the warm summer rain wash right over us. It felt AMAZING and I remember wondering why grown-ups used umbrellas. 

Then, when I was 20, I got stuck in a rainstorm in Florence, Italy. I decided to run through the city anyway, just letting it rain on me, and to this day, that too is one of my favorite memories ever.
